Four clubs from the Russian First Division (CSKA Moscow, Zenit, Dinano Moscow and Sotchi) announced this Friday that they have filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the sanction imposed on them by UEFA, exclusion from European competitions in 2022-2023, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
CSKA announced in a statement that, together with Zenit, Dinano Moscow and Sotchi, it has appealed to the CAS. «All the clubs have requested that their request be examined urgently,» said CSKA, which aspires «to participate in European competitions.»
It was on May 2 that UEFA announced that no Russian club will participate in the 2022-23 European competitions, Champions, Europa League and Conference League. FIFA already announced in February the exclusion of UEFA from the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
UEFA’s decision leaves Zenit, champion of Russia 2022, with its direct pass for the next Champions League.
