A woman in Wisconsin settled with prosecutors on charges that she caused the careless death of her 5-year-old son and hid the body in the trunk of her car for months.
Sagal Hussein, 26, did not contest the charges in Brown County court Tuesday, WLUK-TV reported. Prosecutors dropped five other charges in exchange for the settlement with the woman, who will be sentenced on December 7.
The most serious charge, neglect of a child resulting in death, carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.
According to court documents, the boy Josias Marquez suffered from cerebral palsy and epilepsy. He used a wheelchair, was blind, and needed help eating. She was not receiving adequate medical care and Hussein was not giving her medication to control her seizures.
He was last seen alive on November 25, 2019. The investigation began after a neighbor reported seeing Hussein’s two other children outside the home unsupervised. Police discovered the body in a bag in the trunk of Hussein’s car in March 2020. The body was mummified and showed signs of severe malnutrition, the coroner said.
